No Feeder Cattle Sale last week, comparisons made to two weeks ago. Feeder Steers under 500 8.00 higher, 500 to 550 Steady, 550 to 600 5.00 higher, 600 to 650 8.00 higher, 650 to 800 2.00 to 4.00 higher, Feeder Heifers under 500 4.00 lower, 500 to 600 Steady, 600 to 700 2.00 to 4.00 higher, 700 to 800 1.00 to 2.00 higher. Good Demand for Several Strings, Several Load Lots, and Many Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate to Active Market. Calves suitable for grass continue to find strong demand. Much of the Offering consisted of Home Raised Calves that have been weaned for 60+ days with multiple rounds of vaccinations and a favorable weigh-up. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is February 28.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
