No Feeder Cattle Sale last week, comparisons made to two weeks ago. Feeder Steers under 600 Steady, 600 to 750 Steady to 2.00 higher, other classes of Feeder Steers not well compared, Feeder Heifers 450 to 600 2.00 to 3.00 lower, 600 to 700 Steady to 2.00 lower. Good Demand for Many Long, Long Strings, Load Lots, and Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate to Active Market. The unseasonably warm weather the last couple weeks has created some muddy conditions in the pens and that showed up in some extra tagg on cattle today, otherwise the weigh up overall was good. Many areas across the Dakotas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana have received moisture throughout the winter and optimism on grass type cattle is high. USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
