Compared to last week: Feeder Steers 400 to 500 Steady to 4.00 higher, 500 to 600 6.00 to 8.00 higher, 600 to 650 2.00 to 4.00 lower, 650 to 700 2.00 higher, 700 to 750 2.00 lower, Feeder Heifers under 400 3.00 higher, 400 to 450 8.00 to 10.00 higher, 450 to 500 2.00 to 4.00 higher, 500 to 650 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Very Good Demand for several long strings and many many load lots and packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate Market at first then became a Very Active Market midway and throughout the end of the sale. The entire Offering was Home Raised and carried light to Moderate Plus Flesh with a favorable weigh-up and had Spring and Fall vaccinations. Saturday, November 6: Bred Cow Special, expecting 1,000 Head; the Next Feeder Cattle Sale is November 9, Spring Calf Special, expecting 6,000 head.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
