Compared to last week Feeder Steers under 450 Steady to 4.00 higher, 450 to 500 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 500 to 600 6.00 to 8.00 lower, 600 to 650 2.00 lower, 650 to 700 Steady to 4.00 lower, Feeder Heifers under 400 6.00 lower, 400 to 500 8.00 to 10.00 lower, 500 to 550 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 600 Steady, 600 to 650 3.00 lower. Very Good Demand for several long strings and many load lots and packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on a Moderate to Active Market. Much of the Offering was Home Raised, had Spring and Fall Vaccinations, and carried Light to Moderate Flesh. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is November 16, Regular Cattle Sale and Spring Calf Special, Expecting 1,000 Head.
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
