Reading this report
What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.

Compared to last week Feeder Steers under 450 Steady, 450 to 650 2.00 to 4.00 higher, 650 to 700 Steady, Feeder Heifers under 450 Steady, 450 to 600 2.00 to 4.00 higher, 600 to 650 2.00 higher, 850 to 900 Steady. Very Good Demand for Several Long Strings and Many Load Lots and Packages of Feeder Steers and Feeder Heifers which sold on an Active to Very Active Market for the entire sale. The entire Offering was Home Raised, had Spring and Fall vaccinations, and carried Light to Moderate Flesh. Some of the Offering had some tag and mud from the muddy conditions around the shipping area but overall it was a very attractive Offering. The Next Feeder Cattle Sale is November 2, Special All Breeds Calf Sale, expecting 8,000 Head.
