Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves less than 700 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher. Yearlings over 700 lbs sold steady to 5.00 higher. Heifer calves less than 700 lbs sold mostly steady with 5 weights trading 4.00 higher. Yearling heifers sold 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good for calves with good demand for the short supply of yearling cattle and bred cows. Most calves were hide, hair and running gear condition as they came out of very dry range conditions, living off mommas' milk and top-quality genetics. Most calves hitting the scale are roughly 20 to 40 lbs lighter than expected. Yearling operators have had a profitable year and are eager to get these light calves bought while they are available. Feedlots pushed the market up with live 3.00 to 4.00 higher from 190.00 to 192.00 and dressed sales mostly 2.00 higher to 6.00 higher from mostly 298.00 to 302.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
