Market comments — USDA reporter
Compared to last week, flyweight steer calves sold steady to 10.00 higher. With all other steers calves selling 7.00 to 10.00 lower. Yearling steers sold steady to 10.00 higher. Heifer calves less than 600 lbs sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, over 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 7.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good. Majority of the calves had fall precondition shots. For the lots that only had spring vaccination protocol a steep discount was applied by the buyers. Not a lot of heifers sold this week compared to steers, but buyers did seek out some top quality, reputation genetics to grow and develop into a bred heifer next year. Feedlot trade was slow all week until Friday where feedlots sold live cattle from 222.00 to 227.00 and dressed sales from 350.00 to 355.00. Harvest continues to roll into the feedlots and some elevators. The amount of high moisture corn that some feedlots lay into the bunker in the fall is eye opening! Many feedlots put up 5 to 14 million bushels a year at the feedlots. Think of the acres it takes to harvest that many bushels of wet corn for each feedlot.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
