Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves less than 700 lbs sold unevenly steady, over 700 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher. Heifer calves less than 700 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher, over 700 lbs sold 4.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good for calves, feeder cattle and for spring calving bred cows. Bulk of the fresh bawling calves had fall precondition vaccinations. The fresh bawling calf market backed up a tick midway through the week as winds blew 25 mph and dust was horrible. Some buyers pulled orders back as they didn't want to send bawlers into the dustbowl weaning pens. Buy weeks close, the calf market had rebounded after a very light sprinkle of rain here and there. Feedlot sales mostly steady on the week with dressed prices at 296.00 and live sales from 187.00 to 188.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
