Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves less than 700 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher, 7 weights 4.00 lower, over 800 lbs 10.00 higher. Heifer calves less than 1.00 higher, 6 weights sold 8.00 higher and over 700 lbs sold unevenly steady to 5.00 higher on some. Demand was moderate to good across the state. Buyers continue to seek calves with fall precondition shots. Few, more receipts this week than a year ago as many cattlemen are selling bawlers instead of weaning their calf crop. Feedlots traded show list a little lower than last week with dressed sales steady to 2.00 lower from 296.00 to 298.00 and live sales sold 2.00 lower at 190.00. Light rain across different areas of the state sure has brighten moods of many in the ag sector.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
