Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves sold 10.00 lower. Yearling weight steers in the 800 lbs range sold 3.00 higher with all weights 8.00 lower. Heifers under 500 lbs sold 10.00 higher, 500 to 700 lbs sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, 700 to 900 lbs sold 8.00 to 10.00 higher. Demand was mostly light at the beginning of the week with moderate, instance good by week's close. Demand for bred cows and heifers was good to very good especially on dispersal lots. Another tough week at area markets as the CME cattle boards continue to sell off long positions and wrecking the lively hood of people in the ag sector as they sell their annual incomes. Maybe the CME cattle boards were too high?? Maybe this is where they price should be at? Who knows for sure, but time will tell. Nebraska feedlot trade lower as it follows the CME live cattle. Dressed sales 5.00 lower at 275.00 and live sales sold steady to 1.00 lower at 174.00 to 175.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
