Market comments — USDA reporter

Bulk of the receipts came at the weeks close after the Thanksgiving Holiday. One would assume that the trend would be lower on steers and heifers but that was not the case on the two special calf and feeder auctions on Friday and Saturday. Bulk of the steers sold steady except a few yearling steers sold with a weak undertone. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower, 600 to 900 lbs sold 15.00 lower and over 900 lbs sold 4.00 higher. Despite sharply lower CME feeder and live cattle futures on Friday buyer demand was good at weeks close. Quite a few of the calf offerings were longtime weaned and feedlots that do not like bawlers stepped to the plate to gather some numbers as they back fill empty pens. Cold, snowy weather helped fill (weigh-up) be in the buyers favor at both auctions.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
