Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steer calves under 700 lbs sold mostly 3.00 higher except flyweights sold 9.00 lower. Over 700 lbs sold 2.00 to 4.00 lower. Heifer calves under 600 lbs sold 4.00 to 7.00 lower, 600 to 800 lbs sold steady to 4.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold very uneven. Demand was moderate to good for bawling calves and yearlings with good demand for bred heifers and cows. Buyers continue to be selective and purchase calves with fall vaccinations and uniform. Even though some of these fall vaccinated calves hit the hospital pen they have been healthier overall than calves with springtime shots coming through the auction. Cooler temps in the next few weeks should help freshly wean calves to bunk up and fill their bellies. Nebraska feedlots traded dressed sales 5.00 lower at 282.00 and live sales sold 3.00 to 3.50 lower at 178.00 on negotiated sales. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
