What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?
USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of
the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is
muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle
scores — common across the Southeast.
What is $/cwt?
Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at
$450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per
cwt but less per head.
Why are some prices per head?
Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the
head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a
$/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service's Livestock Market News —
federal reporters at the sale. We publish each report in full and link the
official USDA document at the top of the page.

This week in Nebraska feeder cattle markets trended mostly 5.00-10.00 lower prior to becoming steady late in the week on Friday and Saturday. There were spots of higher market trends for light weight calves suitable for stocker operations. Overall demand was moderate to good. It's been well noted that feeder cattle markets have trended lower over the past couple of weeks influenced negatively by a downward trend in the feeder cattle futures since its September peak as speculators and hedgers continue their quest to find a balance of risk and opportunity in the market. A few bred cow sales took place this week with some complete dispersals noted. Buying interest remains good for replacement cows and heifers. Based on both anecdotal and statistical evidence the cattle industry is yet to begin its herd rebuilding phase and the supply fundamentals supports the ownership of cattle. Fed cattle trade trended lower as well this past week from mostly 166.00-171.00 (Live) / 265.00-272.00 (Dressed) across the 5-area region with most of those markets pulled lower in the late week trade.
