Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week: No comparison for steers under 400 lbs, due to the light run of the previous holiday week. Steers 400 - 600 lbs sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher, steers 600 - 750 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher, and steers over 750 lbs traded 1.00 to 5.00 lower. Heifers under 700 lbs sold 2.00 to 7.00 higher, and heifers over 700 lbs sold steady to 3.00 lower, though heifers 950 - 1000 lbs sold 3.00 higher. Sales were well attended and demand ranged from moderate to very good, with active markets. Negotiated cash feedlot sales traded higher with dressed sales in Nebraska 3.00 higher at 220.00. Bulk of the live sales sold steady to 4.00 higher at 140.00 with some live sales at 142.00-142.50.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
