Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 600 lbs sold 2.00 to 6.00 lower, over 600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 lower. Heifers sold unevenly steady on weights under 800 lbs. Over 800 lbs sold 2.00 higher on a thin test. Demand was moderate to good at reporting auctions. Sales in the central and eastern areas had quite a few farmer/feeders participating along with order and internet buyers across all locations. Some light calves and feeders headed out of state for grazing and feeding needs. Large supply of bred heifers and cows sold with several partial and complete dispersals. Feedlots traded dressed sales at 220.00 steady with last week and live sales sold steady to 2.00 lower on a light test from 138.00 to 140.00. Light to moderate snow across some areas Friday. Several ranchers appeared to be ok with the snow as pastures are very dry and this wet snow will soak into the ground and clear the air of dust.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
