Compared to last week, the shorten Thanksgiving week cattle auctions traded 10.00 higher on steers under 800 lbs, over 800 lbs sold 4.00 higher. Heifers under 600 lbs sold 10.00 higher, 600 to 800 lbs sold 5.00 to 7.00 higher and over 800 lbs sold 2.00 higher. Demand was good on a very active market. Offering comprised of yearling feeder cattle some coming off grass others from backgrounding lots. Weaned and bawling spring calves. Quite a few cattle went to out of state buyers to run on winter grazing and into the feedlot. Negotiated cash live sales from area feedlots sold 4.00 to 6.00 higher from 136.00-140.00 and dressed sales mostly 7.00 to 9.00 higher from mostly 217.00-219.00.

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
