Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week steers under 500 lbs sold 4.00 to 6.00 lower, 550 to 800 lbs steady to 4.00 lower, yearling weight steers steady to 3.00 lower. Heifers under 600 lbs sold unevenly steady, over 600 lbs sold steady to 2.00 higher excepts 800 lbs offering traded 6.00 higher. Demand was moderate to good throughout the week. Several auctions reported active internet buying. Offering this week comprised of bawling, weaned calves with some yearlings in the runs. Quite a few, cull or slaughter cows continue to head to town. Some going to slaughter, cornstalk grazing with some young females heading back to the breeding herd next year. Feedlots live sales traded 1.00 to 2.00 higher from 133.00 to 134.00 and dressed sales sold 3.00 higher at 210.00. Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
