Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, Yearling steers over 700 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher, lighter steers and all weights of heifers sold unevenly steady mostly from 5.00 lower to 5.00 higher. This week's offering was the first glimpse of a fall run with slightly larger volume than we have seen in several weeks. Many grain farmers are still trying to harvest so that is keeping some out of the barns. The supply was typical for October's arrival and varied drastically in quality, condition, and management and this is reflected in both prices and demand. Moisture is either feast or famine some areas mostly in the northwest are overly wet and unable to get into fields to harvest, while areas in the south central and southwest still have concerns of lack of stock water and many are feeding some hay already. There were some reports of extra cows showing up at auctions as grass has run out in areas. A few stick-out sales this week included: Windsor Livestock Auction that sold 39 head of 517 lb. steers for 461.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 84 head of 632 lb. thin steers at 451.00 and 28 head of 670 lb. steers for 391.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 41 head of 730 lb. steers for 378.00, 35 head of 767 lb. steers for 370.00, and 55 head of 906 lb. steers for 333.50. Tina Livestock Market sold 59 head of 815 lb. steers for 350.25. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 67 head of 854 lb. steers for 334.50 and 30 head of 538 lb. heifers for 380.00. New Cambria Livestock Auction sold 20 head of 700 lb. heifers for 370.00. Boxed beef cut-out values were lower for the week. Choice closed at 374.19, down 4.64 and Select closed at 354.19, down 1.27 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 19.70 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported to be just over 85K head, In the north, live prices were mostly 220.00-222.00 to end the week and dressed prices were 345.00-350.00. Prices in the southern plains were not reported due to confidentially rules within mandatory price reporting although private sources showed some at 226.00 with a few up to 227.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4,988 head with a weighted average weight of 552.68 lbs. and a price value of 406.70, 3.39 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 40.73 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
