Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, Yearling steers over 700 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher, lighter steers sold uneven mostly 10.00 lower to sports of 5.00 higher and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. Although the overall offering this week was lighter than last week, a much larger percent of this week's offering was calves. As typical for the season, temperatures are swinging drastically between nighttime lows and daytime highs and prices are wide and very dependent upon health, management and condition. A couple rounds of shots being the most important aspect to buyers and easily paying for the investment. The monthly WASDE report released this week caused corn prices to dive lower, this fueled the cattle futures, although it wasn't reflected in the cash markets as most of the auctions in the state had already taken place by the release of the report the additional 9.00 to near 12.00 gains in the feeder cattle futures is no doubt supportive. Producers in the southern parts of the state continue to get drier, if that is possible, and slowly watching the days pass and hopes of fall pasture fade as the possibilities for frost get more likely each day. A few stick-out sales this week included: Windsor Livestock Auction that sold 25 head of 522 lb. steers for 442.00 and 73 head of 601 lb. thin steers for 435.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 30 head of 561 lb. steers for 425.00 and 46 head of 802 lb. steers for 344.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 80 head of 686 lb. thin steers for 417.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 21 head of 724 lb. steers at 378.50, 124 head of 850 lb. steers for 335.00, and 114 head of 927 lb. steers for 333.50. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 24 head of 515 lb. thin heifers for 418.00. Green City Livestock Market sold 72 head of 739 lb. heifers for 356.00. Boxed beef cut-out values were slightly lower for the week. Choice closed at 373.35, down 0.84 and Select closed at 354.30, down 0.19 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 19.05 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported to be just over 38K head, In the north, live prices were mostly 218.00-222.00 and dressed prices were 345.00-350.00. Prices in the southern plains were not reported due to confidentially rules within mandatory price reporting although private sources showed some at 226.00 with a few up to 227.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3,027 head with a weighted average weight of 546.37 lbs. and a price value of 403.25, 3.45 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 35.11 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
