Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher, with a few spots of 10.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with a good mixture across all weight classes. Demand is good, although where calf prices fall in the spreads is very dependent upon health and weaning programs. This of course is typical for early fall when temperatures swing wildly, and health risk is a huge concern. There was some rain across the state although amounts varied and despite some moisture areas in the south central and southwest remain very dry. Several producers in those areas already feeding some hay and pastures are pretty much gone for the year now. On the other side of the coin a notable increase in interest in replacement quality heifers was seen this week in areas of the state where pasture and feed is more plentiful. A few stick-out sales this week included: Lolli Brothers Livestock Market that sold 26 head of 506 lb. steers for 449.00 and 29 head of 561 lb. steers for 435.50. Callaway Livestock Center sold 59 head of 686 lb. steers for 412.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 27 head of 709 lb. steers for 380.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 70 head of 754 lb. steers for 369.00 Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 113 head of 807 lb. steers for 355.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold 62 head of 881 lb. steers for 343.25. Tina Livestock Market sold 56 head of 913 lb. steers for 335.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold 93 head of 564 lb. heifers for 404.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 74 head of 369 lb. heifers tagged as replacements for 369.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold 24 head of 782 lb. replacement heifers for 3050.00 per head. Boxed beef cut-out values were slightly lower for the week. Choice closed at 372.31, down 1.04 and Select closed at 353.05, down 1.25 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 19.26 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported to be just over 46K head, In the north, live prices were mostly 222.00-225.00 with a few late sales up to 227.00 and dressed prices were mostly 350.00. Prices in the southern plains were not reported due to confidentially rules within mandatory price reporting although private sources showed some at 228.50. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3,745 head with a weighted average weight of 542.37 lbs. and a price value of 409.14, 5.89 higher than last week. The steer/heifer is 39.37 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
