Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 20.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Lower prices along with excessive heat giving producers pliantly of reason to hold marketing in hopes for a market turnaround. Demand remains good just at lower price levels, buyers are becoming quite selective about what they are willing to pay current market tops for, with hair, condition, and health programs making significant price differences. All sectors of the cattle industry saw sharp losses this week which isn't uncommon for the middle of summer, given the historically high price levels the market is at even with losses opinions vary as to if there will be another bounce as seen after last summers drop or if possibly this is it and the highs for this extremely long bull run have been seen. Scattered rains around the state have been frustrating for those still making hay, but no one is going to complain about rains in late July. Pastures remain in good condition, but extreme heat and wind can quickly change that this time of year if one misses too much rain or it was to stop all together. A few stick-out sales this week, again at much lower price levels included 27 head of 517 lb. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 530.00, 20 head of 751 lb. steers for 385.00, 2 loads of 800 lb. steers for 377.50 and 92 head of 858 lb. steers for 360.50. Tina Livestock Market sold 29 head of 554 lb. steers for 487.00 and 53 head of 667 lb. steers for 435.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 29 head of 608 lb. steers for 461.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 31 head of 715 lb. steers for 407.00 and a load of 907 lb. steers for 349.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 99 head of 542 lb. heifers for 444.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 65 head of 707 lb. fancy heifers for 398.50. Boxed beef cut-out values were sharply lower for the week as of Friday's close. Choice closed at 366.81, down 15.87 and Select closed at 355.29, down 13.04 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is at 11.52 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday was reported just under 55K head. Prices were sharply lower with trade beginning early week and losing ground with each day. Live sales reported 230.00-240.00 and dressed sales mostly 375.00-380.00, some falling to 365.00 by late week. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3588 head with a weighted average weight of 552.74 lbs. and a price value of 455.22, 32.01 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 39.40 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
