Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 10.00 lower. The supply of feeders was moderate as temperatures cooled and the fall run draws closer. Several reporters did note an increase in new crop calves this week. As temperatures become more unstable health and weaning programs will become increasingly important to buyers and reflected in prices paid. Southcentral and Southwest Missouri continue to be very dry although some spots did see some much-welcome rains. Areas farther north are in better shape, and some areas are even getting enough rain to delay harvest for a bit. Cattle futures closed the week higher even though it wasn't reflected much in the cash markets this week. Another border port was opened for Mexican cattle this week, numbers crossing at this time really aren't enough to likely make any impact, however. Cattle slaughter was interrupted at some locations this week by ICE and total weekly slaughter estimations were significantly lower than what anyone in the industry would like to see. Stick-out sales of drafts over 20 head included: 36 head of 458 lb. steers at Ozark Regional Stockyards that sold for 488.00, another 28 head of 583 lb. steers sold for 411.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 27 head of 505 lb. steers for 440.00, 160 head of 649 lb. steers for 393.00, and 155 head of 911 lb. steers for 326.50. Mo-Kan Livestock Market sold 412 head of 705 lb. steers for 383.25 and 62 head of 752 lb. steers for 367.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 67 head of 830 lb. steers for 347.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 60 head of 852 lb. steers for 337.75. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 160 head of 675 lb. heifers for 375.00 and 66 head of 811 lb. heifers for 345.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 70 head of 715 lb. heifers for 360.00. Boxed beef cut-out values were higher for the week. Choice closed at 378.83, up 6.89 and Select closed at 355.76, up 2.50 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 23.07 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported just over 28K head, trade in the southern plains was not reported due to confidentially rules within mandatory price reporting. Although no official prices are being reported rumors are that a 4.00-5.00 premium exists in the south. In the north, live prices were mostly 220.00 and dressed prices mostly 345.00-350.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3917 head with a weighted average weight of 551.48 lbs. and a price value of 410.09, 2.75 lower than last week. The steer/heifer is 41.70 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
