Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold every bit of 10.00 to 20.00 higher, with some spots 30.00 to 40.00 higher. Most of the barns were back in business this week after the very light run last week, following the Labor Day Holiday. There was some optimism back in the marketplace even with the futures contracts losing major ground this week. An announcement on Thursday was made by Secretary Brooke Rollins about the reopening of the Santa Teresa port in New Mexico, the largest inspection port for cattle in years past. The monthly cattle on feed report was also released on Friday. On feed numbers totaled 11.2 million head, up 1 percent from last year, and about even with pre-report estimates. The Placements totaled 1.62 million head, which is 9 percent lower than a year ago and 6 percent lower than pre-report estimates. The Marketings totaled 1.52 million head, which was 3 percent lower than last year. The stick-out sales this week included: Callaway Livestock Center in Kingdom City sold 21 head of 457 lb. steers at 514.00, 75 head of 587 lb. steers at 433.00, and 60 head of 814 lb. steers at 374.25. New Cambria Livestock Market sold 31 head of 513 lb. steers at 470.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 45 head of 636 lb. steers at 421.00 and 87 head of 682 lb. steers at 407.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 52 head of 753 lb. steers at 381.50 and 47 head of 916 lb. steers at 339.50. On the heifer side, Callaway Livestock Center sold 33 head of 493 lb. heifers at 424.75. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 33 head of 562 lb. heifers at 405.00. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 62 head of 645 lb. heifers at 378.00, 39 head of 713 lb. heifers at 362.50, and 80 head of 794 lb. heifers at 348.00. Boxed beef cut-out values were uneven for the week. Choice closed at 371.94, down 3.12 and Select closed at 353.26, up 0.13 compared to last week. The choice/select spread is 18.68 per cwt. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the 2:00 cutoff time on Friday were reported at 55,574 head, trade in the southern plains was not reported due to confidentially rules within mandatory price reporting. In the north, live prices were from 220.00-223.00, dressed prices were mostly at 350.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3,439 head with a weighted average weight of 556.38 lbs. and a price value of 412.84, 9.99 higher than last week. The steer/heifer is 34.05 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
