Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 750 lbs. sold 10.00 to 20.00 higher, feeders over 750 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher. About a third of the reported barns were closed for the Thanksgiving holiday week, while most of the other barns advertised and held some sort of special sale. Several producers hold cattle every year to market specifically this week bringing many pot loads and part loads to town with lots of quality and reputation to go along with them. The first real cold weather of the year arrived in the state and late week much of the I-70 corridor received snowfall that measured just over 4 inches in spots. Although the cold weather may not be the most pleasant for the cowboys and cowgirls it is great for growing out cattle and greatly reduces the likelihood of sick calves. Given the abundant feed and grazing available buyers seem to have more than ample orders for the overall short supply that exist and were eager to try to fill as many as possible. A few stick-out sales this week included a 49 head of 523 lb. steers at Unionville Livestock Market that sold for 355.50. Callaway Livestock Center sold 64 head of 579 lb. steers for 318.00. Green City Livestock Market sold 74 head of 663 lb. steers for 295.00 and a load of 909 lb. steers for 259.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 704 lb. steers at 283.50 as well as a load of 800 lb. steers for 277.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 147 head of 766 lb. steers for 267.25. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 122 head of 889 lb. steers at 268.35. A few stick out sales of heifers this week included 61 head of 567 lb. heifers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 292.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 85 head of thin fleshed weighting 629 lbs. at 287.85 and two loads of 712 lb. heifers for 266.25. Green City Livestock Market sold 47 head of 792 lb. heifers for 250.25. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed with the Choice/Select spread setting at 36.22. Choice closed on Friday at 310.52, up 3.11 and Select closed at 274.30, up 2.23 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 77K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Sales were higher for the week. Live sales were reported mostly from 188.00-192.00 and dressed sales mostly at 294.00-306.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4368 head with a weighted average weight of 541.05 lbs. and a price value of 308.27, 15.65 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 30.00 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
