Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with some instances of 10.00 higher. Demand is good to very good with buyers continuing to aggressively buy up any quality calves that can go straight to grazing pastures. The supply was moderate and fairly evenly spread across weight ranges this week. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday with out much in the way of any surprises. On feed and marketings were right as expected, placements were slightly higher than the average pre-report estimate but within the range and there for will likely be viewed as a neutral report. A few stick-out sales this week included a 65 head of 496 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards that sold for 348.50. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 90 head of 522 lb. steers for 325.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 145 head of 661 lb. steers for 290.00 as well as 219 head of 760 lb. steers for 274.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold 4 loads of steers from 855-873 lbs. from 263.25-269.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold 21 head of 516 lb. heifers for 295.50 and a full load of 689 lb. heifers at 263.75. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold 24 head of heifers 715 lbs. tagged as thin for 264.75.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed with the Choice/Select spread setting at 35.34. Choice closed on Friday at 307.41, up 4.07 and Select closed at 272.07, down 4.07 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled just over 53K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Sales were higher early week and gained strength as the week progressed. Live sales were reported mostly from 185.00-188.00 and dressed sales mostly at 290.00 with some up to 300.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5905 head with a weighted average weight of 553.28 lbs. and a price value of 292.62, 1.87 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 29.20 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
