Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers under 600 lbs. sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher with some spots as much as 20.00 higher on lighter weights with good health programs and suitable condition for grazing. Heavier weights over 600 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher. Moisture over the last couple of weeks in wheat growing areas have really improved moods and orders for grazers were abundant this week. Most buyers however want calves that can go straight out to pasture with out having to worry about holding them for a couple of weeks and playing vet dealing with health concerns. A more moderate supply of cattle this week following the disruptions to transportation that were still a concern early last week. A few stick-out sales this week included a 47 head of 506 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center that sold for 324.75. A load of 617 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards that sold for 305.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 105 head of 705 lb. steers for 284.00. MoKan Livestock Market sold 128 head of 801 lb. steers for 268.75. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 868 lb. steers for 256.25. A few stick out sales of heifers this week included 27 head of 599 lb. heifers at South Central Regional Stockyards for 315.00. Tina Livestock Market sold a load of 646 lb. heifers for 270.25 as well as a load of 725 lb. heifers for 260.00. Boxed beef cutouts continue to move lower. Choice closed on Friday at 303.34, down 4.59 and Select closed at 276.9.14, down 3.05 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled just over 69K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Sales were generally 2.00 to 4.00 lower this week. Live sales were reported mostly at 185.00 and dressed sales at 290.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 6397 head with a weighted average weight of 550.66 lbs. and a price value of 290.75, 4.70 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 28.08 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
