Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 750 lbs. sold 10.00 to 15.00 higher, feeders over 750 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 higher. Another tremendous week in the state as demand for cattle extremely out weights the supply currently. Even with a big week at the auctions overall the supply is tight and there is no denying that. Grazing calves that come with shots and a few bells and whistles seem to have no top with some of the feather wights seeing dollar per lb. prices that have gone viral on social media and have audience members questioning the sanity of bidders. Prices have pushed back to record or very near record highs again for all weights of cattle. As the year winds down a lot of special replacement cow sales around the state offering opportunities for producers to add to the herd, overall growth is questionable and more likely numbers are just being maintained as the extremely high feeder prices have not been encouraging for producers to hold and develop heifers over the last year. A few stick-out sales this week included a 46 head of 472 lb. steers at Green City Livestock Market that sold 405.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 42 head of 516 lb. steers for 359.00. New Cambria Livestock Auction sold 49 head of 572 lbs. steers for 335.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of fancy 710 lb. steers for 291.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 376 head of 606 lb. steers for 324.00 and 179 head of 800 lb. steers for 268.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold a load of 856 lb. steers for 265.00. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed with the Choice/Select spread setting at 35.31. Choice closed on Friday at 312.04, up 1.52 and Select closed at 276.73, up 2.43 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 56K head as of the 2:00 report cutoff time. Sales were higher for the week. Live sales were reported mostly from 190.00-192.00 and dressed sales mostly at 297.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 10,471 head with a weighted average weight of 555.21 lbs. and a price value of 318.14, 9.87 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 36.45 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
