Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold mostly 5.00 to 10.00 higher. Markets gained back some of last weeks sharp losses although still off from the records or near records just a few weeks ago. The supply of feeders was moderate as auction movement picked up a bit over the previous week as the extreme heat wave left and made for pleasant August temperatures. Mid-week rains were also welcomed, as some areas were seeing results from heat stress, although a few areas had rains that totaled in the 4-8 inches and caused some localized flooding. Cattle futures ended the week sharply lower wiping out any early week hopes of recovery and marking the third week in a row for losses. Stick out sales this week came from mostly the southern auctions as many north auctions were closed and there were some reporting interruptions with the state fair occurring last week. All the same the southern barns were no slouch and picked up the slack just fine. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold a half load of 503 lb. steers for 333.00 as well as a full load of 907 lb. steers at 233.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a part load of 664 lb. steers at 295.00. Springfield Livestock Marketing Center sold a part load of 709 lb. steers at 274.50. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold two load of 682 lb. heifers at 269.50. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week, choice closed on Friday at 317.45, up 5.21 and select closed at 302.59, up 4.00 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 51K head. Live sales were reported from 185.00 in the south to 191.00 in the north, dressed sales from 296.00-301.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2542 head with a weighted average weight of 549.12 lbs. and a price value of 297.97, 6.29 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 29.66.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
