Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers under 700 lbs. sold 7.00 to 12.00 lower weights over 700 lbs. sold steady to 5.00 lower. Several larger consignments of heavy weight yearlings this week provided poor comparisons on paper where prices would appear slightly higher but overall quality and quantity was much above last week and there were no doubts the market even for high quality reputation cattle has lost some ground. The monthly Cattle on Feed Report was released on Friday and was considered neutral to slightly bearish as actual numbers for on feed and placements were a couple of tenths above the top end of the range of pre-report estimates. Nearly half the state received a half to an inch of rain early in the weekend which is always welcome in late Aug. especially with a very hot week predicted in the upcoming forecast. There is some corn chopping underway now and just a few reports of some corn being shelled already as crops have been ahead of schedule nearly all growing season. A few stick-out sales this week included a part load of 567 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center which sold for 333.00, a load of 735 lb. steers at 285.75 and another load of 935 lb. steers at 235.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold six loads of reputation steers weighting in the upper 8's with the top load selling at 255.85. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold 181 head of 581 lb. heifers at 287.00 as well as 152 head of 705 lb. heifers at 255.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 213 head of 677 lb. heifers at 261.00. Boxed beef cutouts were slightly lower for the week, choice closed on Friday at 317.34, down 0.11 and select closed at 300.46, down 2.11 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 52K head. Live sales were reported from 183.00-187.50 with any premium for northern cattle mostly gone this week. Dressed sales from 293.00-295.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3391 head with a weighted average weight of 561.47 lbs. and a price value of 286.88, 11.09 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 19.61 that is the closest seen since fall of 2022 and half of what it was in early spring of this year when it climbed to over 40.00 per cwt.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
