Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a light test of feeder steers and heifers sold 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Early week saw a continuation of the extreme heat from the previous week and a massive financial sell off across nearly all sectors of trading. Although fundamentals still haven't really changed, they were no longer able to defy technical pressure. Feeder futures have lost nearly 20.00 over the last two weeks. The Missouri Stocker Formula has fallen to levels not seen since early February. Feeder prices over the summer months have really been trending mostly steady at or near all time records so even with the sharp losses over the last couple of week prices levels are still historically high. Mid-week saw a big drop in temperatures for the kickoff of the MO State Fair. Unlike most years there wasn't many young livestock exhibitors found playing at the wash racks; enjoying the chance to cool off as much as their livestock. Hoodies and jackets were common attire in the early and late hours of the day. Rains in some areas as this week has started are quite welcome as last week's drought monitor showed quite an increase in areas drying out from the last couple of weeks. Although pasture conditions are still vastly better than the last couple of years several producers have mentioned grass growth has slowed and some pastures have begun to burn. Although receipts were very light this week and price levels were lower there were still a few impressive sales. Green City Livestock Market sold 3 loads of heavy eight weight steers from 256.50-259.25. Mo-Kan Livestock Market sold a load of 630 lb. steers for 290.50 as well as two loads of 576 lb. heifers for 274.35. Windsor Livestock Auction sold a load of 740 lb. heifers at 254.50. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week, choice closed on Friday at 312.71, down 1.06 and select closed at 298.59, up 1.42 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 71K head. Live sales were reported mostly at 186.00 in the south and 190.00-193.00 in the north, dressed sales reported mostly at 305.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1888 head with a weighted average weight of 555.54 lbs. and a price value of 291.68, 20.07 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 25.91.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
