Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 lower on a light supply. Extreme heat as August arrived limited livestock movement. Aside from a few early week sales which offered some gooseneck to multi pot load consignments, the offerings were light with many drafts of singles or just a few head coming through the ring at a time. Grass and pastures have been extremely good this year, but some areas are starting to see the effects of the heat and lack of recent moisture. The southern half of counties along the KS line are all listed as abnormally dry on the latest drought monitor. If the current weather pattern doesn't change it won't take long before many others join them. That being said there is a tremendous about of feed currently as many producers have hay grass fields twice now which is practically unheard of Missouri prior to the fall growth. A huge sell off of cattle futures occurred the second half of the week with live cattle ending 4.47 to 7.10 lower and feeder cattle 10.05 to 11.88 lower compared to the previous week. A few stick out sales this week included a part load of 518 lbs. steers at Joplin Regional Stockyards which sold for 347.00. Tina Livestock Market sold a part load of 615 lb. steers for 323.00 and a full load of 814 lb. steers at 265.50. Callaway Livestock Center sold a load of 711 lb. steers for 294.75. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market had a some loads of thin fleshed heifers that attracted some attention this week with two load just breaking into the 6's which sold for 309.10 and a load of 724 lb. heifers also thin which sold for 278.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards and Callaway Livestock Center both held special replacement cow auctions this week and sold some fancy young bred cows that got into the low to mid 3000 dollar mark. Boxed beef cutouts were steady to slightly lower for the week, choice closed on Friday at 313.77, unchanged and select closed at 297.17, down 0.29 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 66K head. Live sales were reported mostly at 188.00 in the south and 196.00 in the north, dressed sales reported mostly at 310.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1805 head with a weighted average weight of 550.24 lbs. and a price value of 311.75, 3.06 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 32.16.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
