Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher, with some spots of 5.00-10.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with a better test of the market than last week. Although there were no real heavy volume sales, for mid-summer the offering was pretty respectable. Several reporters noted that quality was much improved over the last few weeks with several load lots of feeders that found good demand from buyers. Grass remains extremely green for the end of July in Missouri so no one is really selling due to lack of grass. The ample pasture has also provided the option to restock some pastures for those who have already marketed some claves that were placed in early spring. A few stick out sales this week included a couple of lots at Callaway Livestock Center where 45 head of 622 lb. steers sold at 325.50 and then 2 loads of 734 lb. steers for 298.28. Unionville Livestock Market sold 5 loads of steers that were heavy eight weights and sold from 266.75-270.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold two loads of light seven weight heifers at 268.25 and 269.50. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold 23 head of 3 year old 2nd calf heifers for 3650.00 per head. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week, choice closed on Friday at 313.77, up 0.28 and select closed at 297.46, down 1.34 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled 52K head. Live sales were reported 190.00-198.00 and dressed sales reported mostly at 312.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3758 head with a weighted average weight of 553.50 lbs. and a price value of 314.81, 7.18 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 30.74.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
