Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher, although some of the extreme tops weren't seen this week especially on the calf offering which consisted of many unweaned calves. Many producers are once again taking the opportunity to market calves early as prices are pushing back to record levels and despite all the thoughts that the market still has room to climb no one is willing to completely forget how fast some unknown something can show up and how fast the market can drop. The monthly cattle on feed report was published on Friday afternoon and compared to the pre-report estimates the report should be viewed as neutral but confirming those numbers could also be viewed as bullish as well. On feed numbers were reported at 99.1 percent, Marketings at 110.1 percent, and placements at 94.2 percent compared to last year. Many farmers got back to planting grains this week, and several are trying to find enough days to hay as well. A few notable sales this week included a load of 541 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center at 361.50. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 155 head of 602 lb. steers for 332.00. A load of 707 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards brought 288.25. Kingsville Livestock Market sold 120 head of 896 lb. steers at 250.00. On the heifer side Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold a load of 508 lb. heifers at 310.00 and Windsor Livestock Market had a load of 745 lb. heifers which brought 254.75. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed this week, choice closed on Friday at 310.45, down 3.00 and select closed at 301.72, up 4.32 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 63K head. Live sales were reported mostly from 187.00-193.50 and dressed sales 304.00-305.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 7,820 head with a weighted average weight of 549.90 lbs. and a price value of 317.27, 1.86 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 35.45.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
