Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, not enough feeders in most weights and grades to provide a test to the market on the shorten holiday week. Near half of the sales in the state remained dark and several others had light volume. There were some full load lots of heavy with yearlings both on the steer and heifer side that sold firm to 5.00 higher. Rains over the weekend once again caused some flooding in a few areas in southern Missouri, North of Mountain Grove in Wright County totals reached 6-7 inches in a 12 hour period putting many pastures and hayfields underwater along with causing many roads to be impassable for a short time. Farmers made good use of the dry days however as most areas didn't receive enough to keep them out of the fields for long if at all. Planters were running as producers tried to finish planting and haying was being done where fields allowed without tracking to much. A few notable sales of yearling cattle this week included a load of 839 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Market which sold for 263.00. Unionville Livestock Market had 3 loads of reputation steers weighting just a couple lbs. on either side of 900 which sold from 254.10 to 258.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards which is a long ways from any corn fields in any direction sold 3 loads of steers just a few lbs. in to the 8's which sold from 256.00-257.00. On the heifer side of the market Kingsville Livestock Market sold 3 loads of 700-720 lb. heifers from 260.00-264.25. Boxed beef cutouts were near steady to slightly higher this week, choice closed on Friday at 313.20, up 2.75 and select closed at 301.712, down 0.01 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 55K head. Live sales were reported mostly from 186.00-192.00 and dressed sales 301.00-304.00. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1882 head with a weighted average weight of 549.71 lbs. and a price value of 313.04, 4.23 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 31.19.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
