Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher, with some spots of up to 10.00 higher. A few local barns did see some lower quotes that seems to be mostly related to the quality of the offering compared to the previous week. The supply of feeders was moderate with several load lots of heavier weights back in the offering this week. The percent of steers to heifers was back at 53:47 squashing thoughts at least for the time being that some expansion had perhaps started to occur. A few farmers got back into the field's late week and over the weekend to resume planting or start haying. A few notable sales this week included a 29 head of 419 lb. steers at South Central Regional Stockyards which sold for 398.50 as well as a part load of 601 lb. steers at 322.50. Tina Livestock Market sold 13 head of 503 lbs. steers at 366.00. F &T Livestock Market sold a part load of 706 lb. steers at 291.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a half load of 824 lb. steers for 250.00. Unionville Livestock Market sold a load of Reputation 902 lb. steers for 247.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold two full loads of light 7 weight heifers for 262.50 and 262.60. Boxed beef cutouts saw large advances this week, choice closed on Friday at 313.45, up 18.88 and select closed at 297.40, up 13.23 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 47K head with more sales taking place after the reporting deadline as trade was late to develop and was still occurring at the report cutoff deadline. Live sales were reported mostly from 186.00-190.00 and dressed sales from 298.00-300.00, with some up to 302.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 7,990 head with a weighted average weight of 541.40 lbs. and a price value of 319.13, 2.32 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 35.57.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
