Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 650 lbs. sold very uneven but mostly 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher, with instances around the state from sharply higher to sharply lower. Feeders over 650 lbs. sold steady to 2.00 lower. The supply of feeders was moderate the amount of heavier weight cattle was not as plentiful this week and for the first time in several months the percentage of steers vs. heifers was closer in line with traditional expectations with about a 60:40 split. For the last several months it has been running a lot closer to 50:50. With only one week of such data reflecting this is it would be extremely presumptuous to assume there has been any shift in the cattle cycle yet. Demand was good. A few notable sales this week included a 44 head of 447 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Auction which sold for 399.00. South Central Regional Stockyards had several stick out sales this week as they had a loaded list of consignments with quality running deep into the offering. 38 head of 528 lbs. steers sold for 356.00, 36 head of 720 lb. steers brought 270.25 and another 46 head of 804 lbs. steers sold for 254.75. Mo-Kan Livestock Market sold a load of 601 lb. steers for 319.00. Callaway Livestock Center sold a load of 929 lbs. steers for 230.25 as well as 29 head of 512 lb. heifers for 313.50. Kingsville Livestock Market had a load of 744 lb. heifers which sold for 255.00. Choice closed on Friday at 294.57, up 0.37 and select closed at 284.17, down 3.48 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 61K head with more sales likely taking place after the reporting deadline, live sales were reported from 184.00-187.00 and dressed sales from 295.00-296.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 6,535 head with a weighted average weight of 543.51 lbs. and a price value of 316.81, 1.91 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 37.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
