Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold unevenly steady to 3.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with a good selection across all weight groups once again this week. Demand was good with a few reporters making note that in some cases if quality was present buyers were starting to overlook a lack of weaning on the calves. Ample moisture has fallen across most of the state now and farmers are indeed thankful but would like to have some sun and be able to get back to work now. A few notable sales this week included a 26 head of part load of 434 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction which sold for 372.50. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 39 head of 509 lb. steers at 351.00. F &T Livestock Market sold 20 head of 604 lb. steers at 319.50. Joplin Regional Stockyards had 31 head of 719 lb. steers at 273.00 as well as two loads of 824 lbs. steers which sold for 251.50. Kingsville Livestock Auction 13 loads of 700-750 lb. heifers from 250.25-252.50. New Cambria Livestock Market had a load of 700 lb. heifers which sold for 256.00. Boxed beef cutouts values slightly lower for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 394.20, down 2.94 and select closed at 287.65, down 1.07 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 71K head, live sales were reported from 184.00-187.00 and dressed sales from 294.00-295.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5,807 head with a weighted average weight of 535.98 lbs. and a price value of 318.72, 3.30 higher than a week. ago. The steer/heifer spread is 38.73.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
