Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 2.00 to 7.00 higher. The supply of feeders was moderate with a good selection of feeders across all weight ranges this week. Demand was good. Moisture finally arrived over the last week with totals varying widely. Some areas in the southeast only reported about an inch while some of the most extreme amounts were reported in west central and surpassed ten inches over the last week. Although ten inches was a bit much the moisture has been greatly needed and despite some flooding will go along ways towards helping improve what have been very dry soils in the state. Prior to being put on hold because of the rain spring field work had been running at full steam. As of the last report planting was well ahead of the five-year average for both beans and corn. Haying was taking place in several areas although most was early type hay that was being wrapped and not put up dry. A few notable sales this week included a part load of 472 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction which sold for 370.00. Ozarks Regional Stockyards sold 49 head of 500 lb. steers for 362.00. Windsor Livestock Auction sold 31 head of 709 lb. steers for 280.00. a full load of 811 lb. steers sold at Callaway Livestock Center for 254.60. Kingsville Livestock Auction sold a load of 731 lb. heifers for 251.25. Boxed beef cutouts values were mixed for the week. Choice closed on Friday at 297.14, up 1.47 and select closed at 288.72, down 2.11 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon report totaled about 84K head, sales in the southern plains were mostly steady, sales in the North were higher for the week. Live sales were reported at 182.00-187.00 and Dressed sales at 294.00-295.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5,374 head with a weighted average weight of 537.27 lbs. and a price value of 315.42, 5.71 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 37.00.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
