Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 10.00 to 15.00 lower. Markets started out the week slightly higher following last week's gains but that took a sharp turn Tuesday as futures markets closed much lower. Technical sell offs and computerized trading in this modern fast paced world resulted in futures markets seeing big losses for the week. Buyers struggled at the barns as it was a full time job reducing bids fast enough to get cattle bought in a way that they could still protect them. The supply of feeders was moderate and included a few special type sales. Calves continue to make up much of the offering but there was several load lots of yearlings. Demand was light to moderate as buyers were just not willing to get into many bidding wars with the markets falling at such a rate. Once again this week there was several load lots of 700-750 lb. heifers sold at various action. Most sold from 230.00-237.50 with one load at 243.50 that was nearly 10.00 lower than equal quality and type of heifers sold for last week. Light seven weight steers only saw a few instances over 250.00 this week and it wasn't but weeks ago some of those loads were into the 280's. Along the same lines only a very few light five weight steers were able to find any prices that began with a 3 this week. Boxed beef cutouts lost a bit more ground this week. Choice closed at 300.46, down 2.34 and select closed at 267.42, down 4.59 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon came in at only 47K head chain speed continues to be slow as packers reduce slaughter thus reducing need to negotiate for any cattle. Live sales were reported mostly from 178.00-181.50 and dressed sales at 283.00-287.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 7278 head with a weighted average weight of 544.96 lbs. and a price value of 263.94, 11.44 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 31.22.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
