Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, although there was exceptions on some calves of high quality and verified health programs which sold steady to 5.00 higher at a few sales around the state this week. The supply was moderate and mostly calves as it typical for this season. Demand was moderate the lack of any sustained stable cold has buyers continuing to want cattle that have a legit health program along with a good 45-60 day minimum weaning. The lower markets over the last few weeks has made any 300.00 plus five weight steers basically non-existent. Only three small packages totally less than 25 head in the entire state found prices passing or very near the 300.00 mark this week. One stick out sale was 63 head of 902 lb. steers at Lolli Brothers Livestock Market that sold for 237.85. A couple of loads of high quality light 7 weight heifers sold for 236.50 and 237.85 which was a good ticket as of late. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday. On feed and marketing's came in even with pre-report estimates. Placements were reported at 104.00 which was about 2 percent below the average but within the ranges of estimates. It should be noted that was comparing to the lowest Oct. placements on record last year. Boxed beef cutouts were mixed for the week with the choice no longer able to maintain a level above 300.00. Friday saw the choice close at 293.87, down 6.59 and select closed at 270.70, up 3.28 compared to last week. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon came in 58K head chain speed continues to be slow as packers reduce slaughter thus reducing need to negotiate for any cattle. Live sales were reported mostly from 178.00 and dressed sales at 282.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 5234 head with a weighted average weight of 541.85 lbs. and a price value of 256.95, 6.99 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 31.65.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
