Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher gaining back nearly all the losses seen last week after the negative monthly cattle on feed report. The supply of feeders was light to moderate and with the majority of the offering being calves under 600 lbs. a much more limited offering of heavy weights this week but those present were generally in full load lots and sold very well. Demand was moderate the hard first hard freeze of the year should reduce some of the risk of sickness for those short weaned and unvaccinated calves. Grain harvest in the state has been ahead of average pace all season and several farmers have wrapped up now which means barns could start to see some farmer feeders back in the seats looking for a winter project. A load of 822 lb. steers sold at Green City Livestock Market this week for 251.00, as well as another half load of 622 lb. steers which brought 284.50. One of the larger strings of cattle this week went through the ring at Ozarks Regional Stockyards a 228 head consignment of 937 lb. steers which sold for 226.50 another 81 head of 534 lb. steers sold at and even 300.00. 9 loads of 7-800 lb. heifers sold at various actions this week from 240.75-251.00 including the largest string of the week at Windsor Livestock Auction which was 254 head of 737 lb. heifers that sold at 246.35. Boxed beef cutouts lost some ground this week. Choice closed at 302.34, down 4.63 and select closed at 272.01, down 8.11 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon totaled only 35K head as packers and feedlot managers were in a standoff. Live sales were reported mostly at 185.00 and dressed sales at 292.00. Nothing official until midday Monday but more trade occurred after hours on Friday and word is prices were steady with those earlier in the week. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3966 head with a weighted average weight of 539.58 lbs. and a price value of 275.38, 10.31 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 35.36.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
