Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 700 lbs. sold 5.00 to 10.00 lower, feeders over 700 lbs. sold mostly steady to 3.00 lower. The supply of feeders was light to moderate. Several reporters noted local offerings consisting of more average to plainer type calves with many coming right off the cow unweaned and unworked and seeing sharp discounts because of that. Demand was light to moderate and continues to be highly dependent upon heath risk. Producers investing the time and work into their cattle are still finding the market tops and being paid for the investment, although prices have backed off from some of the highs a few weeks ago, there are still impressive sales taking place when a premium product comes in the ring. There has been some talk of producers holding cattle back now waiting until weather becomes a bit more stable and some of the farmer feeders get done with harvest and come looking for winter projects. Drought conditions are still a concern in the state as of the latest report 85 percent of the state is still in drought status. Some of the southern parts of the state did receive an inch or so of rain this week but growing days are numbered now. A few of stick out sales this week included 117 head of 825 lb. steers at Windsor Livestock Auction that sold for 256.10. Tina Livestock Market sold 107 head of 723 lb. steers at 275.50. A couple of part loads of mid five weight steers sold at two different barns this week for 313.00. Boxed beef cutouts ended the week mixed. Choice closed at 302.01, up 1.23 and select closed at 275.78, down 0.26 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon totaled just under 90K head for the week. Live sales were reported from 182.00-184.00 and dressed sales were reported at 288.00-290.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2828 head with a weighted average weight of 540.53 lbs. and a price value of 277.24, 7.00 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 26.79.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
