Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers and heifers very uneven with weaned, health program cattle steady to 5.00 higher and unweaned, unvaccinated calves steady to 5.00 lower. A typical October price spread was seen in most sale barns across the state, with the impeding cold weather. Demand for feeders continues to depend a lot on health programs. No hard freeze has been seen yet, but the cooler weather has it on buyers' minds. The supply of feeders was moderate, with the majority of feeders under 600 lbs. Another concern going into the cooler months is hay supply. About 84 percent of the state has been impacted by some level of drought with extreme drought areas mostly in the central to west central areas. Some rainfall was received in areas of the state at the end of last week, but not enough to make much of an impact. Last week's Missouri Crop progress report showed the supply of hay was categorized: 29 percent adequate, 31 percent short, 40 percent very short. Negotiated sales gained a little bit of ground this week, as of Friday's report volume was just under 92,000 head, with live sales mostly 1.00 to 2.00 higher from 183.00 to 185.00, few up to 187.00, and dressed 2.00 to 4.00 higher at 290.00 to 292.00. Boxed beef closed on Friday at 300.80 for Choice and 275.49 for Select, 1.12 lower and 0.29 lower for the week, respectively. The Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3318 head with a weighted average weight of 536.01 and a price value of 277.76, 0.52 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 34.51.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
