Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders under 650 lbs. sold steady to mostly 5.00 lower, feeders over 650 lbs. were mostly steady. The supply was moderate and becoming more calves each week although there was a significant number of full loads of 8 weight steers in the offering. Demand was light to moderate and varied depending on health risk associated with each consignment. Producers bringing unweaned or unvaccinated calves to market continue to see sharp discounts and leave money on the table, although at current price levels many of them still seeing bigger checks than they are accustomed to. Overall it was a tough week for all sectors of the agriculture industry. Factors outside of the industry played a big part in pushing markets lower with concerns about politics and especially the state of the economy making buyers a bit less interested in pushing prices any higher at the moment. Grain harvest is in full swing which has shifted the focus of most farmer feeders to the combines and not the auction arena for the time being. For the first time in just over a month the state wide weight average price for light five weight steers fell just a few cents below the 300.00 mark this week. As mentioned earlier there was many loads of yearlings in the offering this week. 15 loads of steers from about 825-875 lbs. sold from 242.00-247.00. A couple other loads of really fancy kind sold up to 255.00 and some loads of plainer kind were in the upper 230's but it was fairly well established a load of good quality 850 lb. steers was worth about 245.00. A couple of loads of high quality light 6 weight heifers this week sold at 282.75 and 285.75. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for another week with the choice closed at 300.78, down 2.55 and select closed at 276.04, down 4.39 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was right at 65,500 head. Live sales were reported from 183.00-184.00 and dressed sales were reported at 290.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3906 head with a weighted average weight of 539.96 lbs. and a price value of 284.24, 2.61 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 28.10.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
