Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold mostly steady with some spots 5.00 higher, although discounts for unweaned and/or unvaccinated calves continues to be significant. This is resulting in some wide price differences between those calves that are highly desirable and those that come with a lot of risk. Load lots of yearlings continue to show gains and set new price records. The supply of feeders was moderate, but varied from very light to heavy between individual barns across the state this week with no real obvious reason as to why. Demand was moderate and as will be the case for the next month at least management practices or lack thereof will be a huge factor in whether producers see the tops or bottoms of prices spreads. The monthly cattle on feed report was released on Friday with no surprises as actual numbers were perfectly in line with pre-report estimates. Grain harvest is in full swing with nearly everyone shelling corn now. There has been a few bean fields have been cut but most combines are currently in the corn fields. A few stick out sales this week included a load of 572 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center at 315.00 as well as the record setting load of 906 lb. steers which sold for 251.10. New Cambria Livestock Market sold a load of 727 lb. steers for 289.25. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 809 lb. steers at 253.00 as well as 25 head of 341 lb. calves at 335.00. Big groups of feather weights are hard to find currently, but there was some small lots, under 10 head, of three and four weights scattered around that sold way up in the 3's but nothing yet has started with a 4 which was seen a couple of different weeks by a few head back in 2014-15. Boxed beef cutouts continued the seasonal trend lower this week. Choice closed at 303.33, down 2.38 and select closed at 280.43, down 2.69 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was near 75K head reported. Live sales were reported from 184.00-186.00 and dressed sales were reported at mostly 292.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 4089 head with a weighted average weight of 543.42 lbs. and a price value of 286.85, 0.11 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 30.69.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
