Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, steers sold steady to 3.00 higher, heifers under 750 lbs. uneven from 2.00 lower to 2.00 higher, heifers over 750 lbs. not well tested. Much like last week the supply was light to moderate with local sale volume typical of the season. Demand was moderate to good, buyers not as aggressive late week as heat has set in over the state and triple digits are expected for most of next week. Excessive heat makes moving cattle pretty stressful if not outright dangerous and with current price levels no one wants to risk any extra chances of loss. Still some impressive prices being paid for larger drafts of cattle that have all the bells, whistles and paperwork to prove it a legit health program. The monthly cattle on feed report came and will likely go next week without much notice. Placements were slightly below the average pre report estimate but still within the range of guesses. Recent moisture has really improved pasture conditions around the state and a few reports of hay equipment coming back out of storage as farmers were eager to add any hay they can make to hay plies. A few stick out sales this week included some part loads and full loads of 500-550 lb. steers at various auctions from the far south all the way north with top prices from 310.00-312.00. 81 head of 631 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center for 309.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 722 lb. steers at 287.00 and another load of 832 lb. steers at 261.00. Kingsville Livestock Market sold 3 loads of 968 lb. steers at 234.00. Boxed beef cutouts were sharply higher for the week. Choice closed at 316.11, up 13.50 and select closed at 288.36, up 11.13 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon right at 67K head reported. Live sales were reported from 177.00-188.00 and dressed sales were reported from 294.00-297.00 with most sales getting lower as the week progressed despite rising cutout values. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2898 head with a weighted average weight of 548.11 lbs. and a price value of 286.19, 1.92 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 30.77.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
