Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher with spots of 15.00 higher on steer calves. The supply was light to moderate with local sale volume back to fairly typical with what is seasonally expected much unlike the situation about a month ago. Demand was moderate to good with several reporters noting some extra demand for lighter weight calves as some producers are jumping in and buying some fall grazing calves. There is some concern that fall runs could be very limited due to many calves being marketed early due to drought. Even though drought conditions still exist as subsoil moisture has yet to be replenished, looking across pastures and fields provides a very different story as heavy rains have sparked grass growth and many areas have standing water or seen water rushing down ditches recently. A few stick out sales this week included 44 head of 481 lb. steers at Callaway Livestock Center for 233.50. Mid-MO Stockyards had several stick out sales of mid-weight steers, 80 head of 586 lb. steers at 305.00, 42 head of 618 lb. steers at 291.50 and 41 head of 713 lb. steers at 263.25. Joplin Regional Stockyards had the largest draft of the week which consisted of 288 head of 810 lb. steers which sold for 247.00. Slaughter cow prices remain very strong but sold a few bucks on either side of steady this week. Boxed beef cutouts were slightly higher for the week. Choice closed at 302.61, up 0.82 and select closed at 277.23, up 0.75 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was light with just under 44K head reported. Live sales were reported from 188.00-192.00 and dressed sales was reported at 295.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 3550 head with a weighted average weight of 549.30 lbs. and a price value of 284.27, 9.35 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 28.05.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
