Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher with heifers seeing the most increase this week. The supply was light and actually consisted of slightly more heifers than steers and bulls this week. Several auctions around the state has multiple loads of heifers this week. Demand was moderate to good. Heavy rains around the state brought several inches of moisture since last week. Many areas down the midsection of the state reported 4-6 inches with some areas at or exceeded over 10 inches in the last week. Excessive run off filled ponds and caused some flooding issues. Although still a long ways from being drought free most every area of the state is seeing green grass once again. The states crop ratings for beans and corn continue to be the lowest of any of the major states. Several reports of guys that have given up on corn and are chopping or planning to as soon as they can get into fields. A few highlights this week included a load of 710 lb. steers at Kingsville Livestock Auction which sold for 260.25. A load of 910 lb. steers at Green City Livestock Market sold for 249.00. Loads of light weight calves are scarce but 21 head of 555 lb. steers sold at South Central Regional Stockyards for 301.25. There was seven loads of heifers this week at multiple auctions from 650-700 lbs. which sold from 252.00-260.00. Lolli Brothers Livestock Market sold a load of 941 lb. heifers headed to a feedlot for 230.00. Replacement cows continued to see a bit more interest this week. Several high quality heifers sold from 2500.00-2800.00 per head and some better quality middle aged bred cows sold from 1800.00-2650.00 per head. There is still a lot of out of state demand but areas that were not in the worst of the drought are also reporting some local demand as well. Boxed beef cutouts were lower for the week. Choice closed at 301.79, down 0.21 and select closed at 276.48, down 1.06 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was light with just over 43K head reported. Live sales were reported from 184.00-188.00 a very limited number of dressed sales was reported at 294.00-297.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 2527 head with a weighted average weight of 546.66 lbs. and a price value of 274.92, 2.91 higher than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 24.86.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
