Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, a very limited test of feeders sold with lower undertones. The supply of feeders was light. Record setting extreme heat make transporting cattle quite dangerous and several barns canceled sales while most others encouraged producers to postpone marketing if possible. Demand was light as taking delivery of new cattle is also a difficult and risky endeavor with triple digit heat. Several producers did take advantage of the sunshine and went back to the hay fields this week as the rains from the previous few weeks improved conditions. Much to the surprise of many grass responded much quicker than expected. Given the low inventories of hay and uncertainty of what September might bring few were willing to risk the chance of watching grass that could be baled now burning up if rains don't continue. Although the offering was light this week there was several pot loads that sold around the state, most however sold several dollars lower than the last few weeks. General consensus is that most of the lower markets were strictly heat related as fundamentals are still very supportive of the market. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold five loads of 900-940 lb. steers from 230.75-233.00 which was probably the closest thing to steady all week. Interstate Regional Stockyards sold two loads of 740 lb. steers at 260.00 and Tina Livestock Market had a load of 813 lb. steers which sold for 250.00. Boxed beef cutouts were higher for the week. Choice closed at 317.90, up 1.79 and select closed at 292.67, up 4.31 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of the Friday afternoon was just over 61K head reported. Live sales were reported from 178.00-186.00 and dressed sales were reported from 292.00-295.00. Missouri Stocker formula consists of 1147 head with a weighted average weight of 556.03 lbs. and a price value of 272.87, 13.32 lower than a week ago. The steer/heifer spread is 26.14.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
