Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold 5.00 to 10.00 higher and heifers sold steady to 5.00 higher. The supply was moderate to heavy as auction volumes continue to run above what is seasonally typical. Demand was good. Many barns will be closed this coming week in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Many farmers made it to the hay fields this week. The sun is good for making hay but you would be hard pressed to find anyone that wouldn't prefer to be getting rain currently. The Market for cull cows took a big jump this week with several reporters noting 10.00 jumps from the previous week. Many cows bringing over 100.00 per cwt and some higher dressing cows into the mid to upper 120.00's. Some notable larger drafts this week included 137 head of 554 lb. steers at Ozarks Regional Stockyards which sold for 278.00. South Central Regional Stockyards sold a load of 600 lb. steers at 266.00. Joplin Regional Stockyards sold a load of 714 lb. steers at 237.00 another part load of 488 lbs. steers at 287.00. Some smaller lots of three and four weights did break back into the low 300.00's again. Boxed beef cutouts continued to the downward trend this week. Choice closed at 303.93, up 2.83 and select closed at 284.94, up 0.98 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled 95K head, sales were stronger this week both in volume and price levels. Live sales were reported from 171.00-185.00 and dressed sales 285.00-286.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 8665 head with a weighted average weight of 535.20 lbs. and a price value of 256.69, 2.72 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 29.40.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
