Market comments — USDA reporter

Compared to last week, feeders sold steady to 5.00 higher with instances of 10.00 higher especially on the heifer sales. The supply of feeders was moderate to heavy. Auctions continue to see offerings much larger than seasonally typical. Prices jumped back following the slight down turn last week and many producers are marketing cattle early as pasture worries remain. Most areas have received rain but there is still a lot of dry areas and even some that didn't receive any which are extremely dry. Hay harvest has begun and that too looks to be short which is a huge concern given hay stocks are pretty much zero following last year. The largest draft in the state this week was 226 head of 826 lb. steers at Tina Livestock which sold for 204.00. There was several loads of eight weight steers around the state all with a 2 in front of them again and selling from 200.00-209.35. New Cambria Livestock Market sold 84 head of 702 lb. steers at 235.85 and another 52 head of 516 lb. steers at 285.00. Some smaller packages of four weights are back flirting close to that 300.00 market again but most of the bigger drafts of better quality were in the 275.00-285.00 range. Boxed beef cutouts continued to the downward trend this week. Choice closed at 301.10, down 3.51 and select closed at 283.94, down 0.70 compared to last Friday. Negotiated feedlot sales as of Friday afternoon totaled only 63K head, there was likely more sales after the report came in that won't show until the weekly recap. Live sales were reported from 170.00-178.00 and dressed sales 280.00-282.00. The Missouri Stocker Formula consist of 9058 head with a weighted average weight of 532.32 lbs. and a price value of 253.97, 6.62 higher than last week. The steer/heifer spread is 27.77.

Reading this report

What does "Medium and Large 1" mean?

USDA feeder grades describe frame size and muscle thickness, not quality of the individual animal. "Medium and Large" is the frame score; the number is muscle (1 = heaviest muscled). "Medium and Large 1–2" pens mix both muscle scores — common across the Southeast.

What is $/cwt?

Dollars per hundredweight — per 100 lb of animal. A 500-lb calf at $450/cwt brings 5 × $450 = $2,250. Lighter cattle usually bring more per cwt but less per head.

Why are some prices per head?

Bred cows, cow-calf pairs, and some replacement classes sell by the head, not by weight. We show those exactly as USDA reports them — a $/head figure is never converted into $/cwt on this site.
